Things to Consider Before Getting a Dog

Here are some tips before buying/adopting a dog:

Some advice

1) Choice of dog breed

Choose a dog breed that suits your lifestyle (daily activity level, grooming, age, size, general maintenance, etc.).

Some dog breeds have a higher exercise level and need to run and play every day. Others need to be groomed regularly, which can lead to additional costs.

2) Determine your budget

Owning a pet is a privilege, and bringing a puppy into your home comes with various expenses. In addition to the cost of purchasing the puppy, you'll need to budget for vaccines, deworming, and sterilization. Annual heartworm and flea prevention are also recommended, adding to the overall costs.

You'll also need to plan for food as your puppy grows. Don’t forget to account for unexpected events such as injuries, infections, or other health issues. It’s essential to research and understand the potential costs before adopting a pet.

3) Where to look for a dog

There are several places to go to get a new dog, and we recommend the following 2 options:

From a breeder: To find a good breeder, you need to find out about the quality of the breeding, ask lots of questions, visit the location and meet the parents to assess whether their temperament suits you and whether they seem healthy. Also check if a health guarantee is offered and if vaccinations and deworming will be administered before acquiring the puppy. It is not normal for the breeder to refuse to show you around.

In a Shelter: Adopting from a shelter is a great way to do good. Shelters have dogs of all breeds and ages who are just looking to be loved. Here are the advantages: the animal is generally already clean and knows the basic commands. You can also choose a dog that fits your lifestyle, for example: likes other dogs and cats, comfortable with children, etc. Good shelters will also make sure the animal is a good fit for your lifestyle before letting you take them home, which helps avoid any surprises.

We recommend two shelters for adopting an animal, namely Animatch or the Centre Animal Nouveau Départ.

Remember that an animal is a lifelong investment and in return, it will repay you with its unconditional love!
